TEACHING THE U.S. CIVIL WAR AT THE NAVAL WAR COLLEGE

INTRODUCTION

These papers and lectures, given at the U.S. Naval War College between the 1920s and 1940s, comprise part of NWC's long history of examining past naval and military history to glean important contemporary lessons.

The Naval Historical Collection is pleased to present a selection of primary sources from the Civil War era, including letters from sailors serving in the U.S. Navy, and historical research papers and lectures about the military and naval history of the U.S. Civil War given by NWC students who attended before WWII.

The Naval War College elective course,"Yankees and Rebels at Sea: The Maritime Battlefields of the American Civil War, 1861-1865," uses these sources as part of the curriculum to emphasize the continuity of education at NWC and the importance that learning lessons of the past can have to understanding current practice in military leadership and strategic thinking.
