What is a Finding Aid?

A finding aid can be a guide, an inventory, or manuscript register to archival and manuscript collections. Finding aids typically contain a description of the collection; a biographical statement; information about the organization of the collection; and an inventory of the collection’s contents, with box and folder descriptions. All record groups and manuscript collections in the Naval Historical Collection (NHC) have inventories.  In addition, more detailed subject guides and manuscript registers have been created for significant collections.

Subject Guides

Several guides related to the NHC have been published. Researchers frequently begin their search of the collections by consulting the Guide to Archives, Manuscripts, and Oral Histories in the Naval Historical Collection.  This guide offers a comprehensive overview of the NHC's primary collections.  In addition, guides focused on specific subject areas are also available.
